Jean and Magath Argue Over Justice and History in Attack on Titan Episode 84

In Attack on Titan Episode 84, the Marleyan soldiers and warriors and Eldian soldiers meet together to form an alliance to stop the Rumbling. However, the alliance is uneasy to negotiate as there is a lot of distrust and anger from both sides over the past atrocities committed by both.

Magath punctuates the silence by starting the convo about his confusion over why the Eldian soldiers of Paradis Island want to stop Eren from carrying out his plan. He argues that it is pointless for them to want to get their lives in risk when the Rumbling secures a safe haven for all the Eldians to continue living and thriving.

Magath scolds them for getting in the way and obstructing the efforts to make sure that Eren and Zeke don’t meet. Hange Zoe replies by telling him that they never wished for destruction to happen to them.

Magath still claims they still look like devils. He cites some arguments that sound pretty legit. He says the looming danger of the Rumbling has happened and the world is on the brink of extinction.

He points out how their fighting against the Titans has directly led to such an ugly catastrophic outcome for all. Jean gets angrier and screams about how if he did not have to witness his own mother getting murdered by his dad’s first wife, he probably wouldn’t have had the bitterness and rage to unleash such a plan.

Magath calmly retorts by asking him if he wants to talk about “real” history. He refers to how the Marleyans were subjugated and colonized by the Eldians for over 2000 years. He claims that the suffering that the people of Paradis underwent is nothing compared to what the Marleyans experienced.

Jean tells him to get over something that happened a long time back, to which Magath calmly mocks him by saying it’s like talking to a kid. Everyone listens seriously as they realize none is on the right side. Hange cuts them off by saying that something that happened in the past when the two weren’t even there bores the hell out of him.

This heated exchange of arguments is similar to the one Gabi had with Kaya, The whole series is mainly about the impossibility of violence in such human conflicts and how violence inflicted upon entire groups of people just because of their ancestors’ actions can never yield to positive outcomes.
