Ex IAS Anup Chandra Pandey

He was Yogi's Chief Secretary

Anup Chandra Pandey is a retired officer from the 1984 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre.

The Union government has elected him as the new election commissioner.

Anup Chandra Pandey replaces Sunil Arora who retired on April 12.

The Election Commission now has three members which include CEC Sushil Chandra, EC Rajiv Kumar, and Anup Chandra Pandey.

The Election Commission of India is a permanent and independent body established by the Constitution of India to ensure free and fair elections in the country.

Article 324 of the Constitution puts control of elections to parliament, state legislatures, the president of India, and the vice-president of India to the commission.

The Election Commission is an all-India body and is common to both the Central and the state governments.

The changes come ahead of the elections in 5 states i.e., Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Punjab next year.

Anup Chandra Pandey had retired from active civil services on August 2019.

He also served as Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

He also served as the Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh.

His educational qualifications include a B Tech degree in Engineering, an MBA degree, and a doctorate in Ancient History.

His appointment has caused quite an uproar as some believe that the appointment was politically motivated.

The major focus is on his previous stint as Yogi Adityanath’s CS as many believe him to be his ‘right-hand man’.

Some among the public have also accused the Centre of mocking democracy with such a controversial appointment.
