Avengers: Endgame: Why Tony’s “Journey” Quote Is Significant

Avengers: Endgame is a major achievement. It manages to bring over a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling full circle for the biggest superhero adventure that’s ever been seen on the big screen.

We all knew Endgame will bring closure to many stories that begun in 2008 with Iron Man. It opened the door to a world of interconnected superhero stories the likes of which we’ve never seen.

Fans wait time was over after Endgame hit the theaters on April 26. The Epic Saga didn’t allowed any of  its fan to move from the chair for 3 hours. Surely, it was a timely call for the end to MCU’s journey with Endgame. Fans are awaiting the Phase 4 with this conclusion.

“PART OF THE JOURNEY IS THE END.”

Part of the Journey is the end

Many of the fans may have encountered a quote “Journey” during the Endgame’s watch-time. It was tough for some to crack the quote even after so many days. The quote is far more than that. It’s a reminder and a celebration, a message to fans as much as it is to those Tony loves most. It’s a note that all stories come to a close — including his. Let’s break it down.

We all heard this line in the trailer, but most of us thought Iron Man was talking about the proverbial end of an era— not the end of his life.

The following is excerpt from the trailer

“This time travel thing that we are going to pull off tomorrow… it’s got me scratching my head about the survivability of all this. But then again that’s the hero gig. Part of the journey is the end. What am I tripping for? Everything is going to work out exactly the way it’s supposed to. I love you 3000.”

It’s quite clear that Tony’s message is meant to be delivered directly to Pepper and Morgan, especially the last bit about loving her 3000, which was a callback to her telling him that she loves him 3000 earlier in the film.

Daughter of Tony Stark

Five years have gone and everything has changed. He and Pepper are married, he has a daughter he adores, he’s “content” to live in this new world created post Snap.

Of course, hearing the message and seeing Iron Man’s funeral is going to be sad right now. It will ultimately be sad when people re-watch Avengers: Endgame and other Marvel movies, but Tony is saying, to the fans, that he hopes people look back on the film as a celebration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and everything that it’s brought about in the last 11 years. After all, just as Tony says, part of the journey is the end.

Throughout his MCU journey, his entire story arc centered around self-improvement— he eschewed the narcissistic tendencies of his past, striving to become a man who readily put the greater good ahead of his own self-interest. Tony Stark is the one who made the final move and sacrificed his life to save the universe.

It turns out that the line was part of a longer message he recorded before embarking on the Time Heist. He recorded it for his wife and daughter, and after his funeral it’s played for them and a small group of others.
