Everything We Know About How I Met Your Father

“How I Met Your Mother” isn’t just one of the best multi-camera network sitcoms of the 21st century; it’s one of the best modern sitcoms, period. It combined a relatable premise (finding love in your 20s) with an unusual structure and also had some memorable characters like Barney Stinson.

Sixteen years after “How I Met Your Mother” premiered, it’s still legen- wait for it -dary.

So it was really only a matter of time before we got a “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off. According to Deadline, a female-centric spin-off has been in the works for years. Series creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays wrote a “How I Met Your Father” pilot for CBS back in 2014 that would have starred Greta Gerwig and Drew Tarver, but the network passed. Seven years later, Hulu is giving it another shot.

Since it’s a spin-off, fans should already have a pretty good idea of what “How I Met Your Father” might be like, but the specific details about the show are still exciting.

Fortunately, star Hilary Duff shared some tidbits about the upcoming spin-off.

How I Met Your Father should be a lot like How I Met Your Mother, and that’s no coincidence

Hilary Duff discussed her excitement for the project. With a spin-off like this, one big question on everyone’s mind is, “How will it tie into the original?”

Without going into specifics, Duff addressed that question and hinted at what might be in store: “I don’t want to give it all away and the script is definitely being changed a little bit,” Duff said. “But it does tie in and, you know, hopefully, we’ll have some fun guest appearances from the original cast”.

Duff discussed what drew her to the role of Sophie. While “How I Met Your Mother” started off by giving Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) just one candidate for the future mother of his children, Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), “How I Met Your Father” will give Sophie three possible baby daddies right off the bat.

“There’s great characters and I’m going to get to have another on-set family, another TV family,” Duff explained.

There’s so much opportunity for love stories with this show because it’s Sophie and then, three dudes. So it’s going down that whole rabbit hole of like, well, which one was the father? And you get to like go through all of Sophie’s young experience of finding love and dating and what that’s like in the modern world.

Hulu hasn’t yet announced a premiere date for “How I Met Your Father,” but since the series is set in 2021, it will probably be out this year, or 2022 at the very latest.

Time will tell if it can capture lightning in a bottle like the original, but it certainly has the talent to pull it off.
