Is it a Continuation of the Fushigi Yūgi: Byakko Senki series?

The Byakko Senki manga (pictured above) was launched in the Monthly Flowers magazine back in August 2017. But it went on hiatus the following year in August 2018 and still remains so because of Watase’s health concerns. This manga is set to be the last installment in the Fushigi Yūgi’s ‘Four Gods’ narrative.

Watase has previously stated that she was being careful to watch her health progress and also added that she would make sure to put in effort to complete the entire storyline.

She confirmed on Twitter that the new one shot manga will not be connected to the narrative of the Fushigi Yūgi: Byakko Senki manga. It may possibly be a stand alone release but still set in the world of the universe of the four gods.

About Fushigi Yūgi

The first original story follows two teenage students Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo as they get transported to ancient China through a mysterious book they find in the library called ‘The Universe of the Four Gods’. Now picked as the priestesses of two enemy nations to fulfill a prophecy, they navigate their way through this new world and deal with themes of war, friendship, love and fate.

This original Fushigi Yûgi manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Shōjo Comic (Sho-Comi) magazine from 1992 to 1996. Shogakukan also published 18 compiled book volumes.

The next installment, which is a prequel, came with Watase working on Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden (pictured below) from 2003 to 2013.

This story follows the first girl, Takiko Okuda who gets pulled into the mysterious book and becomes the first priestess out of the four nations. Viz Media published both these earlier manga and other works by Watase in North America.
