Google Unveils Gemini AI Tutor via Guided Learning

As the new school year nears, Google has rolled out a powerful update to its AI chatbot Gemini — a tool called Guided Learning, which is designed to act like a personal AI tutor. Rather than just giving answers, it guides users through learning processes step-by-step, aiming to build deep understanding and critical thinking.

This move comes shortly after OpenAI introduced Study Mode for ChatGPT, highlighting a growing trend among AI leaders to reposition their chatbots as educational aids rather than quick-answer engines. Both features are designed to address concerns that AI tools may discourage learning by providing instant answers without context or explanation.

Guided Learning breaks down complex problems, adapts explanations to users’ needs, and leverages multimedia tools — like diagrams, images, YouTube videos, and interactive quizzes — to help users engage more actively with the content. Google says the tool helps students explore the “why” and “how” behind a concept, supporting not just information retrieval but genuine learning.

“Whether you’re preparing for an exam about enzymes, writing a paper on bee populations, or exploring photography, Guided Learning acts as a collaborative thinking partner,” explained Maureen Heymans, Google’s VP of Learning & Sustainability.

Beyond this feature, Google is also enhancing Gemini’s overall learning capabilities. Students can now:

Ask Gemini to generate flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or class notes.

Receive visual aids like videos and diagrams automatically integrated into responses for better comprehension.

To support student access globally, Google announced a free one-year AI Pro plan for learners in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. This plan includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Deep Research, and more — all geared toward supercharging personalized, AI-assisted education.

With Guided Learning and expanded AI tools, Google is doubling down on the belief that AI can enhance — not replace — the learning process, helping students understand, retain, and apply knowledge more effectively than ever before.
