James Gunn a MCU Director Will Now Lead DC Studios

It appears like DC Studios has located its Kevin Feige, and it’s a person whose visage you are extremely accustomed to. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been named the co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, a new organization created to take the place of the failing DC Films, according to a statement released by Warner Bros. Discovery on Tuesday. Gunn and Safran will jointly be in charge of managing all of Warner Bros.’s DC-focused initiatives in cinema, television, and animation. The two will answer directly to David Zaslav, the new head of Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Safran and writer/director James Gunn will share leadership of DC Studios as co-chairs and co-CEOs. The newly established studio will take over for DC Films at Warner Bros. Discovery, which is closing as a result of Walter Hamada’s departure. In an effort to duplicate the success of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, WBD has spent months hunting for an architect to manage its comic book properties on both large and small screens.

Safran will handle the business and production aspects of DC Studios, while Gunn will be in charge of the studio’s creative side. Both creatives will continue to work in their respective domains in addition to their new responsibilities. Gunn and Safran will answer Warner Bros. directly. David Zaslav, the CEO of Discovery, collaborates closely with Warner Bros. Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca, co-chairs and CEOs of Pictures.

Due to his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, James Gunn has a strong connection to rival studio Marvel, but in recent years, he has developed a strong bond with DC. In 2021, he developed and directed The Suicide Squad before developing the popular HBO Max series Peacemaker. He’s confirmed he’ll be in charge of additional DC projects in the future and will return for the second season of that show. The Suicide Squad, Shazam!, Aquaman, and Peacemaker were all produced by Safran, who has a lengthy history of collaboration with DC.
