Marvel’s What If…? imagines how familiar stories would have been if history had gone a little differently. “What if Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum?” That is the question of the pilot episode.

However, Marvel fans are into a different game, calling it “How Come?” And recently, the main question is, “How come Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy cross paths before?” Adding to the fun is director James Gunn answering this question.

James Gunn Answers

Gunn wrote and directed two Guardians of the Galaxy films, has interacted directly with fans plenty of times on social media. Recently, in his Instagram stories, Gunn said, “I just ate way too much cheese. Any questions?” A fan asked a question that concerns this article. Gunn answered, “There are sextillions of sentient beings in the universe. It would be unlikely they had met.

It’s like having two people from New York City and wondering why they didn’t meet. It has a population of 8.6 million. Most people live their lives there without meeting a specific person. Dayton, Ohio, has a population of about 140,000, and most people in a relatively small city do not meet each other.

Fans Playfully Push Back

Some fans thought that the idea of meeting Captain Marvel and the Guardians wasn’t really that far off. One responded, “Well, it’s a little different. She’s a kind of powerful creature, who keeps tabs on the coming and going of different universes, and it’s not hard to tell that they’ve heard of her.”

The fan makes a good point asking about superheroes crossing paths. There aren’t thousands of those. And what the fans are genuinely asking is, “Will we ever see the Guardians and Captain Marvel together again?”

They don’t have much interaction in the Endgame, but the exchange between Rocket and Carol suggests the logic the Gunn is using. When Rocket rages on her for not doing enough, she says, “Listen, Furface – I’m covering a lot of territories. Things that are happening on Earth are everywhere, on thousands of planets.” Rocket acknowledges this point.

What else is James Gunn doing?

Gunn is working on The Suicide Squad, which is the second film with a team of super-villains. He is reportedly having exciting conversations with DC, taking that Harley Quinn solo film Birds of Prey opened in low numbers. It’s not a failure, but it’s not what was expected.

Suicide Squad is filming with a release date of August 6, 2021. Presumably, Gunn will be working on the third Guardians film, which was set back when Disney dismissed Gunn’s earlier controversial tweets. Disney eventually repented and hired Gunn back. While Captain Marvel doesn’t seem to fit in the third Guardians movie, one can’t help but wonder.

As Digital Spy reported, Gunn said he was writing Guardians 3 and had fun with the stories of Nebula and Rocket; he said, “I also think we have great things coming up for the others, like Quill and Mantis. All of their arcs take place over the three films as opposed to in only the individual movies.”
