Marvel characters who are dead after ‘Avengers: Endgame’ [SPOILERS]

“Avengers: Endgame” is the final chapter of a decade-long story, but the story isn’t over. With a number of sequels and prequels yet to hit theaters.

While we all knew that everyone dusted in Infinity War would make their way back in the climax of Endgame. That, along with the whole time travel element, makes things tricky. We’re actually going to have to count the characters who died in both Avengers: Endgame AND Infinity War.

Loki

The God of Mischief died in Infinity War trying to kill Thanos. We thought he might have faked it, but that’s not the case. When the Avengers travel back to the Battle of New York in 2012, they encounter a 2012 version of Loki. In that timeline, Loki steals the Tesseract and escapes with it.

According to an April announcement, Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role on an upcoming Disney+ show about Loki.

Thanos

There is nothing that could be accomplished by bringing Thanos back that wouldn’t just cheapen everything that Endgame worked so hard to create

Thanos is as dead as they come. He is no more. He has ceased to be. “All he is is dust in the wind.”

Iron Man

Perhaps the most powerful, impactful death in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark’s sacrifice sure seems pretty final, doesn’t it? From a dramatic standpoint, you can’t really top the guy who built one of the most successful film franchises of all time sacrificing his life to literally save the entire universe.

From a practical standpoint, Robert Downey Jr. has appeared as Tony Stark a whopping 10 times, has certainly fulfilled his contractual obligations (and then some) and would probably like to get on with his life.

Heimdall

Thanos and his children murder Thor’s friend Heimdall when they invade Thor’s ship. Like other characters who were murdered by Thanos, he does not reappear when Hulk uses the Infinity Stones to bring back those who disappeared.

Gamora

This death, one of the most emotionally resonant from Avengers: Infinity War, turns out to be a bit more complicated. Gamora died on Vormir when Thanos sacrificed her for the Soul Stone.

But, a 2014 Gamora was brought to the main MCU-timeline in 2023, and she switched sides, fighting against her father. Tony Stark snapped his fingers and turned Thanos and his armies to dust, but Gamora may have been spared.

The film ends with Star-Lord searching for her, but it’s unclear if she’s still alive.

Vision

There was no Vision whatsoever in Endgame, but Wanda did talk to Hawkeye about him. In Infinity Wars, Thanos crushed Vision’s skull in order to gain the Mind Stone.

Scarlet Witch suggests that when she and Hawkeye reminisce over the loss of Vision and Black Widow, Vision is lost.

We expect Vision to be resurrected in some capacity off-camera, although he might not have the Mind Stone, which doesn’t exist in this universe anymore.

Natasha

In the Endgame Avengers move to past to reverse the Snap. Black Widow and Hawkeye go to Voramir. They learn from Red Skull that they will have to sacrifice something they love to attain the Soul Stone.

After an extended fight over which one of them will make the big sacrifice, Black Widow jumps to her death. Red Skull had already told Hawkeye that Black Widow’s death is permanent. Later, the Hulk confirms that it wasn’t possible to bring back her.

So yes, it seems like she’s gone for good even though Black Widow is finally getting her own spinoff movie; presumably, it will be a prequel.
