Marvel Studios Halts Development on Three Disney+ Shows – What’s Next?

Marvel Studios has reportedly paused development on three upcoming Disney+ projects, marking a shift in its approach to its television lineup.

After facing criticism for overcrowding the Multiverse Saga with too many projects, Marvel is now focusing on a more refined and strategic approach to content production. However, this shift has led to the temporary shelving of three anticipated series:

Nova
Strange Academy
Terror, Inc.
Let’s break down these projects and what this means for Marvel’s future.

1. Nova (Disney+ Series)

Status: On hold indefinitely
Originally Planned Release: 2028 or later

Fans have long awaited Nova’s live-action debut, with rumours of a Richard Rider or Sam Alexander series circulating for years.

In December 2024, Marvel Studios hired Ed Bernero (Criminal Minds) as showrunner, confirming the project’s active development. However, it was already expected to be 3-4 years away from release, and now that timeframe could be even longer.

Despite this setback, Nova remains a highly requested character, so there’s still a strong chance the project will move forward in some form.

2. Strange Academy

Status: Paused until further notice
Concept: Wong is teaching young sorcerers at a mystical school

Inspired by the Strange Academy comics, this series would have followed Benedict Wong’s Wong as the head of a mystical school, likely training young magic users like America Chavez.

Given the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene, which teased America learning the Mystic Arts, this project seemed like a logical next step.

However, with Marvel reshuffling its priorities, it remains uncertain if or when Strange Academy will enter production.

3. Terror, Inc.

Status: First public mention, now on hold
Concept: An antihero who absorbs body parts and their powers

The most mysterious of the three projects, Terror, Inc. would have introduced a lesser-known Marvel character named Terror, an antihero who gains abilities by replacing his body parts with those of others.

Since this was the project’s first official reveal, it’s unclear if it ever got past the concept stage before being paused.

Given its darker themes, it could have aligned with Marvel’s more mature projects like Daredevil: Born Again and Blade. However, with the new focus on streamlined storytelling, it’s uncertain if this unique premise will ever see the light of day.

Why Did Marvel Put These Shows on Hold?

Marvel Studios is currently undergoing a major restructuring of its TV division. Instead of releasing multiple projects each year, it aims for fewer, higher-quality Disney+ series.

According to Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, the new strategy involves:

Developing multiple pilots before deciding which series to greenlight
Creating full show bibles (detailed outlines of the series’ direction)
Experimenting with different stories before full production begins
This approach aligns with traditional TV studios, allowing Marvel to be more selective with its releases instead of immediately committing to every idea.

What’s Next for Marvel Studios on Disney+?

While Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. are on hold, Marvel still has several confirmed Disney+ projects moving forward:

✔️ Agatha: Darkhold Diaries – Fall 2024
✔️ Daredevil: Born Again – 2025
✔️ Ironheart – TBD
✔️ Spider-Man: Freshman Year (Animated) – 2025

Additionally, Marvel is likely prioritizing projects connected to major upcoming films rather than standalone spinoffs.
