Marvel’s Biggest Flop of 2025: Thunderbolts Ends Box Office Run with $382 Million*

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has officially wrapped up its theatrical run, revealing final box office numbers that make it the MCU’s biggest disappointment of 2025.

Released on May 2, Thunderbolts grossed $190,274,328 domestically (United States, Canada, Puerto Rico) and $192,162,037 internationally, for a worldwide total of $382,436,365. While that’s more than double its $180 million budget on paper, the film’s actual profitability is questionable due to theater revenue splits and marketing costs.

The break-even point for most big-budget films is roughly twice the production cost, meaning Thunderbolts may have just broken even—or potentially still fallen short. This is a far cry from Marvel’s usual track record, with many past films easily surpassing $500 million and several hitting the $1 billion mark.

What makes Thunderbolts an even bigger mystery is its critical and audience reception. With an 88% Tomatometer and a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was hailed by many as one of Marvel’s best in recent years. Yet it still underperformed compared to its 2025 counterparts—Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

In fact, outside of The Marvels (Marvel’s lowest-grossing film ever), Thunderbolts’ domestic numbers are the weakest in over a decade, surpassing only early Phase 1 titles (Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk) and 2015’s Ant-Man—though Ant-Man still outperformed it globally.

For a studio used to billion-dollar blockbusters, Thunderbolts’ $382 million run cements its status as Marvel’s biggest flop of the year, despite winning over fans and critics alike.
