Marvel’s New Phase 4 Movies Release Date Slate In Detail [2020-2022]

MCU Phase 4 Films In Development SR

Due to the spread of the pandemic, Marvel Studios delayed almost its entire Phase 4 slate. Here are the updated release dates from 2020-2022.

Phase 3 concluded with Spider-Man: Far From Home acting as an epilogue to Avengers: Endgame, which ended the Infinity saga, and the departure of MCU mainstream Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans). Although this was the end of an era, it was far from the end of the franchise.

This is the complete updated MCU schedule for 2020-2022.

Black Widow: November 6, 2020

The first movie to suffer at the hands of the Pandemic is Black Widow. This one is over a decade in the making, as Natasha Romanoff debuted in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Since then she has been a supporting player in her fellow Avengers’ solo flicks. Even though she was killed off in Endgame, she is, at last, getting a spotlight of her own. The prequel is set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and the focus is on Natasha reuniting with her Russian family to take down the villainous Taskmaster.

Despite its heavy marketing and ten years of waiting, Black Widow’s release is adding on a whole six months. Originally set to hit theatres on May 1, 2020, the new date is November 6, 2020.

Eternals: February 12, 2021

Marvel Eternals 2020

The cast features new MCU characters played by a star-studded lineup including Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

Without the Eternals trailer, the Marvel die-hards continue to hoop about the details of the film. Although the initial plan was to start November 6, 2020, the Black Widow now occupies that date, knocking the Eternals to February 12, 2021. The decision leaves the MCU with just one big-screen appearance in 2020, breaking a decade-long tradition that releases at least two MCU films a year.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings: May 7, 2021

With Simu Liu at the forefront, the film is credited with introducing MCU’s first Asian hero, and the mention of Ten Rings signifies the return of Mandarin, which has divided MCU fans in Iron Man 3.

As Eternals has moved to its original release window, Shang-Chi is moving forward for four months. Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings will hit the theatres on May 7, 2021.

Spider-Man 3: July 16, 2021

Spider Man in Captain America Civil War

Fortunately for MCU fans, Sony has not delayed Spider-Man 3, which is still set for July 16, 2021, only two months after Shang-Chi. With the rights to Spider-Man, Sony has attempted to cross over its Spiderverse releases with the MCU, teasing a connection in the Morbius trailer. Morbius will release on March 19, 2021, just four months before Spider-Man 3, and fans will discover just how related Sony’s Marvel movies and the main MCU are.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: November 5, 2021

Despite his pivotal role in Avengers: Infinity War, his second instalment of Doctor Strange is long overdue – five years in the making. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still one of MCU’s most ambitious projects, with early rumours hinting that this is Marvel’s first horror film.
While those rumours have been taken a backseat, the Multiverse movie is set to travel in new creative directions, and Doctor Strange 2 may have important connections to Disney+’s WandaVision series.

Stephen Strange’s return, previously scheduled for May 7, 2021, is now pushed back seven months, hitting theatres on November 5, 2021.

Thor: Love And Thunder: February 18, 2022

Thor Love And Thunder Script Update Director Taika

Thor: Love and Thunder are among the most highly anticipated Phase 4 offerings on the way. Following the success of Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi‘s return to the director’s chair, Natalie Portman rejoining the MCU in the main role for the first time since Thor: The Dark World, and the news that Tessa Thompson confirmed MCU-newcomer Christian Bale will play the film’s villain all served to build even more anticipation for the fourth solo Thor movie.

Originally scheduled for November 5, 2021, Thor will return to the big screen on February 18, 2022.

Black Panther 2: May 8, 2022

Black Panther 2 leaks

Breaking the trend of changing release dates, Black Panther 2 was announced May 8, 2022, and remains in place. The first film had box office records for February, considering it was assumed as a weak release month.
Sticking with the early release of Summer signals Marvel’s plans to further capitalize on such a lucrative franchise.

Captain Marvel 2: July 8, 2022

The distant movie has been recently confirmed in the Phase 4th calendar. Captain Marvel was a massive hit in 2019, grossing $1 billion worldwide, and the studio also confirmed Captain Marvel 2 as Marvel Studios announced changes to the slate. Brie Larson’s return as Carol Danvers is set to hit theatres on July 8, 2022.

While the human cost of the coronavirus is a major factor in the crisis, the release dates of the transfer have been a disappointment to many Marvel fans. Nonetheless, from the sequel to the original stories, Stage 4 has it all, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe can look forward to the movies finally hitting theatres.
