Sony’s live adaptation of Metal Gear Solid has been long-awaited; and there has now been a recent development—actor Oscar Isaac is set to play the lead of Solid Snake.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island, The Kings of Summer) is directing the movie, Avi Arad is producing. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), is the scriptwriter, with Peter Kang as the executive overseeing this project for the studio.
Entertainment website Deadline, who was the first to report this news, notes that “Given Isaac’s extremely busy schedule, a production start date is still unknown but his involvement makes this property a high priority for the studio going forward.”
Metal Gear Solid is a 1998 Playstation game created by Hideo Kojima, which features lead Solid Snake, who is a soldier. In the first game, he has to infiltrate a nuclear weapons facility to disarm a powerful nuclear weapon called Metal Gear to neutralize the terrorist threat from renegade special forces unit Foxhound, who has seized control of a nuclear launch facility in Alaska with hostages. The game is critically acclaimed and is praised especially for its plot and story-telling. The last Metal Gear video game that Kojima released with Konami, called Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, sold more than six million copies on its launch in September 2015.
A movie adaptation of the video game has been long in the planning: creator Hideo Kojima had announced such plans in 2006 for a 2011 release. However, that was postponed indefinitely in 2010. In 2012, Kojima had announced that Arad Productions would be producing the movie. Vogt-Roberts has been working on the adaptation at least since 2017, and in December 2019 had announced that their new draft had “full [Hideo] Kojima-quirk and full Military surrealism.”, and also that he was looking for a specific actor for the lead role.
Oscar Isaac had previously stated his willingness to play the role of Solid Snake in an earlier interview in March 2019:

Following which, director Vogt-Roberts commissioned artist BossLogic for art portraying Isaac as Solid Snake:
To everyone asking how I feel about Oscar Isaac saying he wants to be Solid Snake.
The full process required to cast an icon hasn’t even started, but..
Ask @Bosslogic where the idea for his brilliant mock up came from.

Isaac has long been a fan-favorite for this role, and had even posted a fan-made edit of him as the character on Facebook:
No further information regarding the adaptation has been released so far, but with this casting, it appears that Sony is finally gaining momentum with the production.
Oscar Isaac has appeared in the Star Wars series, Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis, and as Duke Leto Atreides in the upcoming Dune reboot.
