Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow Honored in Emotional Tribute, 5 Years After On-Screen Death

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Black Widow remains one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As one of the original six Avengers, introduced in 2010’s Iron Man 2, Johansson quickly established herself as a key figure in the MCU, starring in eight films as Natasha Romanoff (nine if you include her cameo in Captain Marvel). Her journey culminated in a solo film that played a pivotal role in launching the Multiverse Saga.

However, the most heartbreaking moment of Black Widow’s MCU arc came in 2019’s blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. In a scene that left audiences stunned, Natasha sacrificed her life to obtain the Soul Stone, a move that was essential for the Avengers to ultimately defeat Thanos and restore balance to the universe.

In addition to her 2021 solo film Black Widow, Marvel has kept her memory alive through various tributes and memorials, ensuring that Natasha Romanoff’s legacy continues.

Scarlett Johansson Tribute at Live Marvel Event

On August 30 and 31, Marvel Studios hosted the Infinity Saga Concert Experience at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. This event featured a live performance by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who played some of the most iconic scores from the MCU’s Infinity Saga.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and acclaimed MCU composer Michael Giacchino were present on stage, adding to the evening’s significance. The concert paid homage to the MCU’s Infinity Saga, featuring live performances of the franchise’s musical scores, accompanied by footage from all 23 films in the Saga.

One of the most poignant moments of the evening was a nearly three-minute montage dedicated to Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. This tribute, which featured scenes from Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and all four Avengers movies, highlighted some of Black Widow’s best and most memorable moments. The montage also included footage from Black Widow (2021) and Hawkeye (2021), ensuring her impact within the Multiverse Saga was also acknowledged.

The tribute was particularly emotional as it played during the section dedicated to Avengers: Endgame. Fans relived Black Widow’s sacrifice, with her death scene shown almost in its entirety, followed by the scene of Smart Hulk’s snap with the Stark Gauntlet and the climactic final battle between the Avengers and Thanos.

Will She Return to the MCU?

While Avengers: Endgame marked the end of Scarlett Johansson’s on-screen journey as Black Widow, the door for her return might not be fully closed. In November 2023, Kevin Feige confirmed that Johansson is involved as a producer on an undisclosed MCU project. Although she may not return as an actor, her influence will continue behind the scenes, helping shape the future of the MCU.

Given the current Multiverse Saga, the possibility of Johansson reprising her role as a Variant of Black Widow from another universe can’t be ruled out. Fans are speculating that she could make a surprise appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), a film that Marvel hopes will feature the biggest cast in comic book movie history. With rumors swirling about Robert Downey Jr. potentially playing Victor Von Doom, many are eager to see if any version of Black Widow will face off against the legendary antagonist.
