Scrapped Plans Reveal How the Young Avengers Nearly Fought Kang in the MCU

Were the Young Avengers Originally Set to Debut in The Kang Dynasty?
Recent comments from Loki creator Michael Waldron have revealed that Marvel Studios once had an entirely different plan for the Young Avengers’ first big-screen appearance. Speaking during an AMA on Reddit, Waldron shared that he and writer Jeff Loveness pitched a scene in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty where the young heroes triumphantly defeat a version of Kang—only to realize they had just beaten a “first-day Kang.”
According to Waldron, the concept was played for both humor and character growth, showing the teenage team’s excitement turning into disappointment when they discovered their opponent was still learning the ropes of multiversal conquest. Waldron recalled, “Jeff Loveness and I spent an afternoon pitching the Young Avengers defeating a version of Kang and being so stoked about it… only to discover that particular Kang carried a card that said, ‘Be patient with him, it’s his first day.’”
Why Was the Idea Abandoned?
Waldron joined The Kang Dynasty in late 2023 after director Destin Daniel Cretton stepped away. But the project soon collapsed following actor Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles, which led to his firing and the complete reworking of the film. The storyline that once revolved around Kang has now evolved into Avengers: Doomsday, with Victor Von Doom replacing Kang as the central villain.
This shift effectively shelved the Young Avengers’ planned debut, leaving fans wondering when they will finally assemble on screen.
When Could the Young Avengers Finally Appear?
Despite the scrapped Kang Dynasty version, the Young Avengers’ future still looks bright. The post-credits scene of The Marvels teased Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) recruiting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to form a new team. Reports from 2025 also suggest that the Young Avengers—or a version of them—may appear in Avengers: Doomsday, standing alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to face Doctor Doom.
Marvel Studios is also rumored to be developing a Young Avengers spinoff series titled Champions, which could continue the team’s story after Secret Wars.
If those plans hold, fans may soon see the MCU’s next generation of heroes rise—just not in the way Marvel once envisioned.
