Spider-Man 4: Why a New Director Is Exactly What the Franchise Needs

MCU Fans Might Get Daredevil And Spider-Man Together Very Soon

After months of uncertainty, Spider-Man 4—officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day—is finally swinging into action for its 2026 release. With Tom Holland and Zendaya confirmed to return, fans have plenty to be excited about. But there’s one major shift that might redefine the future of the franchise: the departure of director Jon Watts, and the arrival of Destin Daniel Cretton.

And truth be told? That might be the best thing to happen to the web-slinger in years.

Meet the New Director: Destin Daniel Cretton

Cretton is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After directing the critically acclaimed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he went on to help develop Wonder Man, an upcoming MCU satire set in Hollywood. Though he was initially tapped to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, he eventually stepped away to focus on more grounded MCU stories—like Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Now, he steps into one of Marvel’s most iconic legacies, taking the reins from Jon Watts, who helmed all three films in the “Home” trilogy.

Why the Director Switch Works in Spider-Man’s Favor

1. A New Era Deserves a New Vision
At the end of No Way Home, Peter Parker made the ultimate sacrifice—erasing his existence from the memory of everyone he loves. He’s no longer the bright-eyed high schooler with an Avengers internship. He’s alone, in a rundown apartment, stitching together his own suit like the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man he was always meant to become.

That shift is huge. And with Peter moving into his adult life, it makes perfect sense to bring in a new director with a distinct visual and emotional tone. Cretton’s grounded, character-driven storytelling style could breathe new life into a franchise that’s transitioning from teen drama to something more mature and layered.

2. Cretton’s Action Chops Will Elevate Spider-Man
One of the standout elements in Shang-Chi was its innovative, martial arts-inspired action. From bus brawls to scaffolding skirmishes, the fight choreography was dynamic, fast-paced, and filled with emotional stakes.

That’s exactly what Spider-Man needs.

Fans have long craved more acrobatic, up-close web-slinging action, and Cretton has proven he can deliver visually stunning fight scenes that don’t sacrifice character. Expect more grounded hand-to-hand combat, sharper choreography, and maybe even some new gadgets or techniques we haven’t seen before.

3. Jon Watts’ Exit Was Inevitable—and Timely
While Jon Watts did a fantastic job introducing MCU Peter Parker to the world, three movies in, his departure felt natural. In fact, it’s extremely rare for one director to helm more than three entries in a superhero franchise. The only exceptions include Bryan Singer with the early X-Men films and the upcoming Russo Brothers’ fourth Avengers movie (Secret Wars).

Watts was also originally set to direct Marvel’s Fantastic Four reboot but exited the project in 2022 citing burnout from the superhero genre. Since then, he’s turned his attention to other projects like Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and the FX series The Old Man.

Put simply: Watts needed a break, and the franchise needed a fresh pair of eyes.

4. New Director, Same Writers—Is That a Problem?
While Destin Daniel Cretton brings new energy to the director’s chair, the writing duo Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers—who penned the “Home” trilogy—are returning.

That decision has sparked some debate among fans.

Some praise the writers for delivering fan-favorite moments in No Way Home, while others feel the emotional depth and character arcs were sometimes overshadowed by crowd-pleasing cameos and MCU tie-ins.

But with Cretton now onboard, there’s hope that his direction can reframe the narrative—focusing more on personal stakes, grounded relationships, and emotional growth. If he has creative input during rewrites (as many Marvel directors do), we could see a more balanced, human-driven story.

What’s Next for Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Besides Holland and Zendaya’s return (with MJ’s role reportedly “significantly reduced”), there’s still no confirmation on whether Jacob Batalon will reprise his role as Ned Leeds. Batalon has expressed hope to return but hasn’t been officially announced.

The film will reportedly introduce a new supporting cast, new threats, and a fresh tone—possibly laying the groundwork for Spider-Man’s future in the Young Avengers, Street-Level Heroes lineup, or even Secret Wars.
