The Seven Deadly Sins is currently riding high on the Netflix charts after the latest set of episodes were released. Season 5 of the show, however, has already been confirmed by TV Tokyo, who air the anime in its native Japan.

Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement (Nanatsu no Taizai: Fundo no Shinpan in Japan) is the name of the next season, which will be Season 5 of the show on Netflix and Season 4 in Japan. The reason for this is because Signs of Holy War is classed as a separate OVA (original video animation) special in Japan and as Season 2 on Netflix.

Originally, this season was meant to air in Japan in October 2020, which would have meant it had a likely Netflix release date in July or August 2021. Traditionally, the streamer has aired episodes of the series in the U.S. four to five months after the final episode of the season has aired on TV Tokyo, and the previous two seasons which started in October ended in Japan in March.

The show, however, will no longer be airing on TV Tokyo this October. Due to the coronavirus, production of Season 5 of the beloved anime series, which is currently number three in the Netflix TV charts, has been delayed.

However, a new release date has now been announced. Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon’s Judgement is now set to air on TV Tokyo BS-TV Tokyo and five other affiliates in January 2021.

As for what that means for the show’s Netflix release date, it is not good news. Assuming the new season follows the previous ones and has 24 episodes, these are likely to air weekly in Japan until mid-June 2021. That would mean that the earliest likely Netflix release date for Seven Deadly Sins Season 5 in the U.S. is October or, more likely, November 2021.

There are a few silver linings, however, for American fans of the anime. The network has released the first visual for Dragon’s Judgement, which confirms all the cast members who will be returning for Season 5. A Japanese-language trailer has also been released that gives fans their first glimpse of the new episodes.

The makers of the manga the show is based on have also announced that they will be making a spin-off to the Seven Deadly Sins. Known as Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yon-Kishi or The Seven Deadly Sins: The Four Knights of the Apocalypse, it has been rumoured that it will be a sequel loosely based on the myths of King Arthur, who is also currently featured in fellow Netflix show Cursed.
