Why Are Marvel Fans Tweeting #SaveDaredevil?
Back in 2018, after Netflix canceled its critically acclaimed Marvel TV series Daredevil, fans put up a tough fight pushing for the show’s return. A huge group of Daredevil fans came together and created the #SaveDaredevil campaign, gathering followers and supporters by the thousands.
However, after their efforts appeared to not change a lot in the immediate aftermath of Daredevil’s cancellation, the organization focused on the biggest factor limiting Disney, which was beginning to build its own Marvel TV shows to premiere on Disney+, from immediately bringing back the show for a fourth season: Marvel’s initial deal with Netflix.
It turns out that the devil was in the details: The contract stated that the rights to Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the other Marvel shows and characters at Netflix belonged to the streamer for two years after cancellation, and no other company could do anything with them until that time was up.
Now, there’s renewed hope for Daredevil, as the rights to the characters have officially returned to Disney as of November 29, 2020. This means that Disney can now legally introduce Daredevil and the other Defenders into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, should the company choose to do so.
The #SaveDaredevil team has been counting down the days until this moment, and have officially launched another #SaveDaredevil campaign on Twitter to bring attention back to the series.
Fans want Disney to officially bring Daredevil into the MCU
Netflix’s Daredevil premiered on April 10, 2015, and stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who spends his nights as a vigilante on the streets. The series also features Vincent D’Onofrio as the well-known villain Kingpin, with a supporting cast that includes Deborah Ann Woll as the justice-seeking Karen Page and Elden Henson as Matt’s best friend and partner in law Franklin “Foggy” Nelson.
The series ran for three seasons on the streamer and currently stands as the second highest-rated Marvel television series on Rotten Tomatoes, just behind Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Now that there are no legal obstacles blocking Disney and Marvel from continuing Daredevil or even just using the characters, fans will accept no excuses for a lack of action. They have taken to Twitter en masse, using the hashtag #SaveDaredevil in countless tweets, causing it to trend worldwide.
While the TV-MA rated series may not seem like a fit for Disney+, there have been reports that the streaming platform intends to move into more mature content in the future.
Marvel is only just beginning its Disney+ TV journey with upcoming shows like WandaVision, and it seems like the company isn’t afraid to take risks. With the devoted fanbase and high reputation of Daredevil, what real reason is there to not bring it back?
