World Bicycle Day Celebrated in India and the World

The invention of the bicycle cannot be credited to a single person. Over the years, many people have put forward ideas that eventually shaped the modern-day bicycle.

The modern-day bicycle is a versatile machine that is used in various ways from entertainment to transport and sports and has been in use for two centuries.

Karl Von Drais, Pierre Lallement, Kirkpatrick Macmillan are some of the many people that envisioned the first bicycle.

The United Nations declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day.

The United Nations listed a number of benefits of using bicycles. Benefits include providing moderate physical activity and exercise, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. Also, it helps in reducing pollution, as it does not use fuel and can help in the green recovery of the Earth.

On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, UN General Secretary António Guterres encouraged many users to continue to ‘keep those wheels turning’. The logic is that it helps people to stay healthy and reduce pollution through bicycles.

World Bicycle Day in India

India has one of the largest cycle user population in the world. Here, owning a cycle is a status symbol. Even during these harsh times, the cycle sales of India have doubled over the last 5 months.

Many celebrities celebrated World Bicycle Day, taking the issue up on social media platforms. Among those celebrities is Indian Actress Dia Mirza who tweeted “More Cycling Tracks Please”.

Many Twitter users encouraged the use of cycles by citing benefits and also posting pictures with their beloved two-wheeler.
