World Oceans Day 2021: Saving the Lungs of our Planet

world oceans day

World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8 June every year.

The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean.

As a result, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean.

The aim is to unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.

The theme for this years World Ocean Day is The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.

This year’s event will emphasis on the ocean and how it is our life source, supporting humanity and every other organism.

It was originally proposed by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development  and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit in 1992.

The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth and also produces 50% of the oxygen.

Oceans are the lungs of the earth as they are the largest provider of oxygen, which comes from marine plants.

There are five ocean basins: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic and the newly recognized Southern.

However, due to human exploitation, oceans are threatened with extinction of marine life and destruction of marine ecosystems.

As a result, we have lost over 90% of big fish population and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed.

World Oceans Day is  a part of SDG 14 which seeks to conserve and sustainably use ocean resources.

World Oceans Day was also celebrated in India with many users taking to Twitter to raise awareness on the issue.

An artist had also created a sand art in Puri beach, Odisha to generate awareness on the issue.
