Flowers Of Evil

Flowers of Evil follows its unlikable bookish protagonist, Takao Kasuga. He impulsively steals the gym clothes of Nanako Saeki. However, one of his classmates, Sawa Nakamura, sees Takeo commit this act and blackmails him into a “contract” of sorts.

Although Flowers of Evil contains more psychological thriller elements than conventional horror elements. The anime also contains several unnerving aspects like an overarching claustrophobic, helpless feeling, and the characters’ unsettling, all-knowing faces.

Paranoia Agent

Paranoia Agent, a psychological slice-of-life thriller is directed by Satoshi Kon. The aftermath of a horrendous event caused by a young assailant is referred to as Lil’ Slugger. While none of Lil’ Slugger’s victims can remember their attacker’s face.

While the thought of a young boy being responsible for such grisly attacks is terrifying in and of itself. Paranoia Agent takes a sharp turn when it is revealed that Lil’ Slugger is not human. Rather, he was actually created by his first “victim,” Tsukiko Sagi. A character designer unintentionally brought the eccentric assassin to life to avoid being held responsible for her dog’s death at the beginning of the anime.

Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia follows Teiichi Niiya as he meets the mysterious Yuuko Kanoe while wandering the halls of an abandoned school building. Teiichi and viewers alike are shocked when they learn that Yuuko is a ghost who is stuck in her own personal purgatory because of her amnesia.

Even though much of the inherent horror of this anime is contained within the very fact that Yuuko is a ghost. It contains deeply unsettling elements such as its eerie lighting and unnerving soundtrack.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen follows Yuji Itadori as he lives an initially normal high school life surrounded by his friends. When Yuji joins his school’s Occult Club he witnesses them seal a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna on a severed finger. However, after being chased down by sorcerer Megumi Fushigaro, Yuji consumes the cursed finger and becomes possessed by Sukuna.

Yuji is uprooted from his mundane life and enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High School. Jujutsu Kaisen possesses more notable supernatural elements than traditional horror elements. The anime contains unnerving subject matter like tragic character deaths and plenty of bloodsheds.

School Days

School Days follow as high schoolers Makoto Itou and Kotonoha Katsura confess their feelings for one another and begin dating. However, the anime takes a dark turn when Makoto cheats on Kotonoha with Sekai Saionji.

School Days contain surprisingly dark subject matter like sexual assault and bitter jealousy that leads Sekai to murder Makoto after he gets back together with Kotonoha. Kotonoha kills Sekai in an insurmountable rage and runs away with Makoto’s severed head.
