James Michael Tyler Reveals That He Can No Longer Walk Because Of Cancer

Gunther from FRIENDS Cancer: Actor James Michael Tyler who is popularly known for hir role as Gunther on the sitcom FRIENDS revealed his health condition. The actor said that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer three years ago.

Tyler opened up about his health conditions for the first time. The actor revealed that after years of battle with his prostate cancer, he can no longer walk.

Tyler played the role of Gunther, who is the coffee shop manager of Central Perk in FRIENDS. His character also had a crush on Rachel Green, who was played by Jennifer Aniston.

In an interview with Today’s Craig Melvin, Tyler shared that he was diagnosed with the disease back in September 2018. After a physical routine check-up, Tyler was told that he had prostate cancer.

“I was 56 years old at the time, and they screen for PSA, which is a prostate-specific antigen,” Tyler shared. His results then came back with an extraordinarily high number.

After he went online and checked his blood result tests, Tyler said he knew there was something wrong immediately. The actor also shared that his doctor immediately called him after his tests.

His doctor told him that there might be serious problems with his prostate over the phone call. Soon, they discovered that Tyler’s cancer had already spread to his bones.

Tyler revealed that his cancer is currently stage 4. “Late-stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me,” the actor told Melvin.

Tyler’s Advice To Men

According to the interview, Tyler is currently undergoing chemotherapy and can no longer walk. Through his tragic journey, the actor said that he wants to use his platform to urge men to ask for a PSA test from their doctors.

“I missed going in for a test, which was not a good thing,” Tyler noted. He added that it is easily detectable and if they catch it early, there are many ways to treat it.

However, the actor’s conditions have worsened especially during the pandemic as his cancer has mutated. Tyler also had to avoid attending the recent FRIENDS reunion special show in person due to his prostate cancer.
