Demon Slayer: History of Tanjiro’s Hinokami Kagura Explained!

tanjiro Kamado using the Hinokami Kagura

We first saw Tanjiro Kamado use the Hinokami Kagura against the Lower Rank Five Rui of the Kizuki (Twelve Blood Moons) which was successful to a certain extent. This usage triggered memories of his father performing this dance in a ritualistic performance for the Fire God.

Later, after his encounter with The Flame Hashira, he learns more about the technique after Rengoku directs him to his family’s library. During the Entertainment District Arc, he used the technique several times against Upper Rank 6, Daki without being immobilized from the sheer amount of work it required.

The Kamado Family’s Secrets

The Hinokami Kagura is a technique that has been passed down from generation to generation, from father to son. The Hanafuda earrings are another precious family heirloom that have been passed down too. On seeing these earrings, Rengoku’s father, a former Hashira, accused him of being the wielder of the Sun Breathing Technique.

The technique is first shown when Tanjiro Kamado remembers his father performing a ritualistic dance using this special breathing technique in the snow mountains to appease the Fire God. It is performed every year for half a day from the time the sun rises till sunset.

The dance is made up of twelve portions that are repeated. The breathing technique used in this dance gives users the consistency to never become weary regardless of how long they move, allowing them to dance indefinitely.

Who Created The Hinokami Kagura Technique?

Shinjuro Rengoku subsequently reveals the Hinokami Kagura to be a renowned Breathing Style known as Sun Breathing. Yoriichi Tsugikuni invented the technique decades ago and tweaked it to fit the needs of the students he taught.

This is the first Breathing Style ever invented, and it is very famous and yet forgotten probably due to its sheer immense power. It is the source of all other breathing styles.

How Does Tanjiro Use This Technique?

Sun Breathing and Hinokami Kagura are Breathing Styles that imitate the sun through the user’s movements, techniques, and powers. There is no established pattern for any of the techniques or forms.

People who use this technique have to imagine manipulating the sun and using it in battle effectively against the demons. Later, Tanjiro improvises on this technique and learns to eliminate certain unnecessary hand movements, breathing rhythm giving him greater strength and efficiency in his fight against Muzan.

He realizes this after he gained access to his ancestor’s memories and learned that the original one was quite different from the ones he learned. This technique can be taught to other people if taught by a descendant of the Kamado family.
