John Wick: Chapter 3 Takes Down Endgame’s Domestic Record

John Wick 3

John Wick is ruling box office like a king. The third installment to martial art action flick has stormed the box office badly in just a few days. It has taken the top spot at the North American box office and ended the three-week reign of “Avengers: Endgame.”
John Wick 3 brought in around $57 million which topples Avengers: Endgame’s fourth-weekend box office of around $29.411 million.

It’s Keanu Reeves’ second-biggest domestic debut, sans inflation, outside of the $91 million Fri-Sun debuts of The Matrix Reloaded in 2003. Even adjusted for inflation, it’s behind only Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Matrix Revolution, and Matrix Reloaded.
The number for John Wick 3 is exceptional, as a lot of third movies tend to flop, but John Wick 3 nearly doubled the last movie, which doubled the first movie. So John Wick 3 is performing over 300% better than the first movie’s $14 million.
The flick has made almost $150 million worldwide to date and also has an A- CinemaScore, an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score with 92% of the audience stating they liked it, and a 74 on Metacritic.

Lionsgate is pretty excited by the number as Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, released a statement (via Deadline):
“John Wick is a unique character and franchise that has grown in popularity from film to film and keeps getting better and better, thanks to the incredible talent of Keanu Reeves and because of the creativity and true artistry of the filmmaking team and our partners at Thunder Road, as well as director Chad Stahelski. This is the best-reviewed film of the series so far, and we believe word-of-mouth will continue to drive strong business for the film all over the world.”

The $30 million, R-rated, the star-driven original was projected to open with $7 million in October of 2014, but it parlayed good reviews, decent buzz and a kind of generational coronation for Keanu Reeves into a $14 million launch.

John Wick 3 beats Avengers Endgame

That’s quite a feat for a hard-R action film to unseat summer box office champ Avengers: Endgame from its No. 1 spot, Fans like the franchise’s ascension from scrappy martial arts action flick to the chief vehicle of the Keanu-science.

Regarding Avengers: Endgame’s fourth box office, it dropped 53.5% and is just under Infinity War’s own fourth weekend of $29,452,90. Endgame has a current domestic haul of $770,805,870, passing Avatar and becoming the second best movie in the U.S., and a current worldwide box office gross of $2,616,288,482. Avatar also stands at $2.787 billion for the top spot worldwide, so we see Avengers: Endgame is right there.
While John Wick 3 managed to take down Avengers: Endgame, Keanu Reeves is actually rumored for the MCU, so it seems to be all good.
The Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu, came in #3 for the weekend at $24,815,000 and has made over $290 million worldwide.
