Kentarou Miura, Creator of Best-selling Manga Berserk, Dies at 54

Hakusensha, the Japanese publishing company made an announcement on Thursday that the creator of the manga, Berserk, Kentarou Miura passed away on May 6 in the afternoon because of acute aortic dissection. He was of age 54. His family held a small private service for his funeral.

Born on July 11, 1966 in Chiba prefecture, Miura debuted as a mangaka in 1985 with the short project called “Futatabi…” (Once More…) in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine.

After that, Miura went on to publish the one-shot version of the Berserk manga in 1988 in Hakusensha’s Monthly Comicomi magazine.


The official serialization of the Berserk manga series began in 1989 in Hakusensha’s Monthly Animal House magazine. And the series continued in Hakusensha’s Young Animal magazine until now. As of May 2021, the manga has more than 50 million copies in circulation.

Berserk manga is known for its frequent hiatuses which started in late 2006. After another 8-month hiatus, two chapters were released in April and August of 2019.

Miura then published three chapters across the months of April, July and October in 2020. The last chapter published of Berserk before Miura passed away this May was in January 2021.

What is the Plot of Berserk? 

The Berserk manga is about a superhumanly strong warrior called Guts who wields a large sword and manoeuvres his way through a dark medieval world filled with demons and various other horrors.

Every night, he is attacked by demons who are attracted to the curse branded on him after a traumatic incident. He begins his journey with the goal to defeat a demon, who is a former friend and who took everything away from him.

A television anime series based on Berserk manga came out in 1997, after which an anime film trilogy ran from 2012 to 2013. Another anime series was released in Japan in July 2016, and the second half of the new series premiered in April 2017.
