“What If…?” Director Teases Season 2 Says It Will Be More Wilder

Marvel’s animated series “What If…?” premiered on Disney+ last summer and was an immediate hit with fans. The series flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. The show was nominated for 3 Emmys and renewed for a second and third season.

Now the director of the “What If…?” series Bryan Andrews is saying the following season of the show is going to be even wilder. In an interview with Deadline, Andrews explained what is going to make this season different than the last.

“Obviously more unique stories that slowly get a little bit wilder. In the first season, Kevin (Feige) wanted to keep it a little bit closer to the vest, have a little thing that was different and that little thing made these things different, but still tied very much to either moment in the movie or a particular film itself.”

With the long production timeline of animated projects, Andrews admits there are plenty more films released since the first season he, AC Bradley, and therefore the rest of the Marvel Studios Animation crew can pull from.

“What If…?” Season 2 gets “wackier”

“Now there’s more films and things to pull from, so we don’t have to have just a tiny moment. we can expand out and things can get a little bit wackier,” Andrews added. “We take it up a notch in season two and then in season three we just go even wackier. In season two, we’ve different characters that we haven’t got a chance to play with before and we see how they’ll integrate with some of the favorites that come back. There’s plenty of really cool stuff and I can’t wait for people to see it.”

He also shed some light on why Marvel chose the Doctor Strange episode for Emmy consideration something that happened before the Multiverse of Madness movie was even officially a thing.

“There’s plenty of other great episodes, but this one overall had such an emotional core. It just made the whole thing strong and cohesive, but I think the strongest thing is the ending.”

The first nine episodes of “What If…?” while fun and at times, quite compelling, did not have the fan reaction that Marvel Studios was perhaps hoping for. Elements like the pacing, animation style, and attention to detail all saw their fair share of critiques. The first season of Marvel’s What If…? is now streaming on Disney+ while the second season is due out early next year.
