Isekai Quartet

When the casts of KonoSuba, Overlord, Re:Zero, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil hit a red novelty button, they found themselves in yet another world. Isekai Quartet’s world, however, was just a regular Japanese high school. Their school was so bland that it felt like it was ripped out of a generic school life anime.

This was intentional on the part of the hit comedy Isekai Quartet. Since mesmerizing worlds were the norm for these Isekai characters, getting transported back to a boring school was what counted as “weird” for them. Isekai Quartet often called attention to this discrepancy for a punchline, and the characters overreacted accordingly.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil

The Saga of Tanya the Evil is one of the weirdest isekai around. Its idea of a wish-fulfilling world is a bloody battlefield. When the nameless salaryman woke up as Tanya, he quickly surmised that this new world was the same as Earth. The main difference was that magic existed, and it was used in World War I.

Because Tanya was a gleefully cruel misanthrope in her previous life, she found this brutal warzone to be paradise. The way this isekai world only existed to be Tanya’s sandbox instead of a well-thought-out alternate history made it stand out among other similarly self-indulgent isekai worlds for the wrong reasons.

Konosuba — God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!

As an isekai spoof, it made sense for Konosuba to be set in the most generic fantasy imaginable. That said, there was a lot more thought put into its setting. It’s heavily implied that the hilarious shonen anime Konosuba only looks and operates like a formulaic RPG fantasy.

The Crimson Demons are the best evidence of this. Their Chuunibyou fashion and traits were taught as “tradition.” Isekai anime are often accused of being transparent wish-fulfillment, but Konosuba took this to a weird lore-building extreme.

Interspecies Reviewers

The infamous Interspecies Reviewers was a raunchy send-off to fantasy anime. Its world wasn’t too different from countless other kingdoms. The only real difference was that the realm was filled with anachronistic modern red-light districts.

The titular reviewers offhandedly talked about adventurers from other worlds who introduced them to certain modern customs and inventions. This would explain why modern trappings like electricity, maid cafés, and love motels were commonplace in Interspecies Reviewers’ isekai world.
